Cape Town Food Trucks

On the Go

In a time where people quickly grow bored and move onto the next thing, what could be more ingenious than a location that moves with them? This is what Cape Town Food Trucks aims to do. Trucking across the Mother City, they stop at hot spots around Cape Town and offer one of my favourite things: FOOD! The concept of mobile dining is nothing new having originated in the US in the 19th century, but it is exciting to see an old idea blended back into contemporary culture, particularly as our obsession with food grows.

Many Capetonians may still be familiar with Limoncello, the restaurant in Gardens which closed its doors a few months ago as owner Luca Castiglione struck out on a new venture, although never reneging on supplying us with the finest Italian fare. I came across Cape Town Food Trucks purely by chance, having won a bottle of limoncello from them. The idea behind limoncello is to have it as a digestif after a meal. I first tried it at Carne a few months ago and almost cried like a whipped dog. I have since become accustomed to it, but still find it quite potent and despite repeated remonstrance from my mother for eating, talking and walking too fast I still struggle with this habit and having to endure slowly sipping something such as an digestif drives me mental. Being a foodie, though, this is a bad habit that must be overcome quite quickly. However, limoncello can also be drunk with tonic water or champagne and can be served with gelatos or fruit salad. For now I will expand the ingredient with these delightful suggestions as a clever guise for my wimpiness.

I love the adventure that presides behind Cape Town Food Trucks: that you never quite know where they will be. You may stumble onto them by chance or otherwise let the trusty blue bird tell you by sending them a tweet (@CTFoodTucks) and they will quickly respond – keeping you in the loop and on the go. Generally, however, you can find them at the Old Biscuit Mill on Saturdays, in Harrington Street’s parking lot on Thursdays, at the Oude Kraal Market on Sundays and they’ll even be at Rocking the Daisies this year!

My trucking journey led me to Harrington Street’s parking lot on a tempestuous Thursday; dark clouds constantly loomed only to be chased away by the bright sun – one of those days Cape Town is infamous for. I was proffered with a fantastic selection of calzones, paninis and risotto. I was quite pleased with my final choice: a Norwegian Salmon Panini, especially as it was made with fresh rocket – one of my absolute favourite ingredients. A big fan of paninis I enjoyed it but, of course, it was consumed far too quickly. Just an excuse for another visit I suppose and with changing menus and versatile venues that take in bustling cities and sweeping landscapes you are assured of a unique experience every time and always guaranteed great food!
