Big 5

Big 5 Safari Destinations

The members of the Big 5 roam free across many countries in southern and East Africa. Whether you wish to see one, two or all five, below are a few safari suggestions for a Big 5 quest in Africa.

Rhinos

Approximately 80{06d929bd3ad4c6a95bf55e898d2636034900819a69887101e766a047db33ac60} of the world’s rhino population is found in South Africa, making it a great destination to see this magnificent member of the Big 5. The Kruger National Park is a natural option, but there are many other national parks and game reserves in the country where rhinos can be found. Further afield, in Kenya, is the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a great place to find black and white rhinos. The Ngorongoro Crater in neighbouring Tanzania is another great choice.

Elephants

The best place to see elephants in Africa include the Chobe River and Linyati in Botswana; Selous Game Reserve, the biggest game reserve in Africa, located in Tanzania; and Samburu in Kenya.

Leopards

South Africa is also a great destination when looking for leopards. Other great locations include Luangwa Valley in Zambia and the Masai Mara in Kenya.

Lions

All the usual suspects are on the list of lion locations; Kruger Park in South Africa; Masai Mara in Kenya; Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania; as well as Moremi in Botswana. In Tanzania you will also find tree-climbing lions at Lake Manyara.

African Buffalos

African buffalos live in big herds and are possibly the easiest of the Big 5 to spot. Some of the best places include the Chobe River and Okavango Delta in Botswana and Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania.

Big 5 Safaris

As you can well imagine, South Africa, Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania are excellent choices if you want to see all of the Big 5. Just make sure you are in the right region within each country, so that you choose a game lodge or safari camp that offers all five members.

Even More Safari Adventures

There are plenty of other places to choose from if you are not set on finding all the members of the Big 5 or are focused on other animals. There are wonderful game reserves in South Africa and Namibia where you can see cheetahs; and holidays in Uganda are highly recommended if you wish to see mountain gorillas. The Etosha National Park in Namibia and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa are also wonderful wildlife experiences.
