Chisum

Chisum

The fact that this entire film is named after John Wayne’s character, John Chisum, probably just shows the kind of clout Wayne had – particularly at this stage of his career; and the fact that Chisum was a real person feels practically incidental. However, Chisum is about much more than one wealthy man in the West, and the more interesting character portrait rests in Billy the Kid.

As the film flows with the steadiness of the Pecos River, the good and bad guys are clearly delineated, and it looks set to be a dull and predictable journey. But the story’s action-inducing catalyst turns the strongly-established streak of optimism on its head and paves the way for turning it from a quiet contemplation of the West into a Western action romp.

The initial monotone lulls you into a false sense of security as you are warmed by the endearing nature of the good guys and their amiable camaraderie – from the gruff yet kind Pat Garrett to Henry Tunstall, who sees good in everyone. Yet despite their charm, the characters are fairly archetypal, and the story’s subtle depth lies in other areas. An understated, yet pointed, focus on wildlife is highlighted in Chisum’s nod to the animals remaining in the countryside; the mentioning of the wiped-out buffalo populations and the hilarity of the cows loosed onto the little town within Lincoln County. A more sympathetic view of the Comanche is also portrayed, most poignantly through Chisum and his relationship with Chief White Buffalo.

But make no mistake, this is an American Western where cowboys save the day, the film bedecked with a great opening sequence and endless shots of the rough and beautiful countryside – standing as a metaphor for John Wayne’s character. There is also great tension created in never knowing what Chisum will do. The film has a few antiquated moments of awkwardness such as the twanging soundtrack and the laughable close-ups, but its rollicking action and dash of romance make it an entertaining and endearing Western nevertheless.
