Safari Animal Myths Busted
During a safari in Africa you could see the fastest living land mammal in the world, the cheetah; the biggest land animal, the elephant or the most social big cat, the lion. Game drives are a fantastic opportunity to see wildlife in all its shapes and sizes, and to learn a lot about them. However, over the years and often through pop culture, various animal myths have cropped up. We bust a few of these myths about African animals below.
Understudy Blues
Nestled close by Cape Town’s legendary, unfinished bridge is the Waterfront Theatre School which recently opened the Galloway Theatre as an intimate, creative space. This is the setting for Canned Rice Production’s debut Understudy Blues. Opening night was abuzz with excitement and anticipation about the one-woman cabaret extravaganza directed by Richard Wright-Firth and starring Candice van Litsenborgh, accompanied by Drew Rienstra on piano. What is the Big 5?
A discussion about Africa often brings up the terms safari and the Big 5. Many have heard of safaris, but what about the Big 5? What does this refer to? Some do know the answer: a group of five animals highly sought after on safari. The confusion usually comes with identifying which animals form part of this particular group. One of the clues might come in the form of the term’s original definition. Many people mistakenly believe that the term refers to the five biggest animals in Africa. This is not the case. The term, in fact, refers to the five animals hunters found the most challenging to pursue. The term was adopted by tour operators as a must-see list of animals while on safari, some of which may prove challenging to find.
